End of ebolavirus disease (EVD) outbreak in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

On 25th June 2020 the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced the end of the ebola outbreak affecting Eastern DRC since 2018.

Official numbers put the number of confirmed cases at 3,463 and the number of deaths due to ebolavirus disease (EVD) at 2,280.

Another, unrelated ebolavirus outbreak is ongoing in Equateur Province in Northern DRC.

The risk to travellers to DRC of contracting ebola is now considered extremely low by Health Protection Scotland.

Nevertheless, anyone who develops flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache, diarrhoea or general malaise within 3 weeks of returning from an EVD area should seek medical attention urgently, by telephoning NHS24 (111) in the first instance:  Do NOT attend a GP surgery or hospital (- unless otherwise instructed)!
