Another case of rabies from Philippines in a traveller

Another* case of rabies has just been reported (2/6/20) in Japan in a patient bitten by a dog in the Philippines in September 2019.

The first symptoms of rabies did not present until 11th May 2020, eight months after the exposure.

Analysis of the virus in the patient confirms that it is from a local strain known to be circulating in the Philippines.

Generally, it takes up to 12 months to be given a fairly confident 'all clear' after a potential exposure to rabies in a previously unvaccinated patient. However, the longest, documented incubation period for rabies in a human is 19 years!
